Help “House of Monsters” cross the finish line

The Kickstarter campaign for stop-motion series House of Monsters is currently eight days out from finishing, and while it looks like it’s building some momentum, it’s gonna need a little juice from monster fans to go all the way. Take a look at the campaign page or my previous HoM post for a rundown on why this project is worth your contribution (short version: talented and experienced people building and animating incredibly detailed monster puppets, including an excellent werewolf), or check out this higher-level backer reward: get turned into a monster puppet and have a role in the show! Help Kickstart the mischievous denizens of “House Of Monsters”

Last month I posted about House Of Monsters, a delightful stop-motion short by Dawn Brown about a bunch of monsters – including a rakish werewolf – getting up to shenanigans in a gorgeously realized castle. If you enjoyed that mix of nostalgia and tactile wonder, I have good news for you: Dawn and her crew want to make it an ongoing web series, and they’re asking for our help on Kickstarter. (more…)

Don’t let Reagan or The Mummy win! Pre-order “The Werewolf of NYC” issue 2

After the success of the first issue, beautiful scratchboard nightmare The Werewolf of NYC is back for a second round on aperfectempire.com. Featuring art & story by Edwin Vazquez, The Werewolf of NYC chronicles the downwards spiral of a troubled (wolf)man in 1980’s-era New York City. (more…)

Humanity’s at the bottom of the food chain in “The Cursed and the Damned”

As reported by PDX Werewolf earlier today, N.A.S Studios has just launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the first two issues of their  six-issue “werewolves vs. zombies vs. everyone else” comic series “The Cursed and the Damned“. The end of the world is near, and I’m guessing the only move left to humanity is to decide which supernatural creature we’d prefer to have gnawing our bones. (more…)

WOLFEN JUMP In Print fundraiser!

Last year, a group of twenty-four artists contributed weird, heartwarming, terrible, scary comics to an anthology with an “extremely nebulous” theme of “wolf”. The result was WOLFEN JUMP, which I got very excited about during its inception phase. Now volume one is complete, and you can read the entire thing online for free.

But what if you want to read these comics somewhere other than Tumblr’s hyperactive nightmare zone? (more…)

Four werewolf projects fight for your crowdsourced dollars

I was away, and now that I’m back I’m finding all these Kickstarter and Indiegogo projects in my inbox, some of which were sent to me weeks ago! In the interest of getting these in front of you as soon as possible, I’m going to forego the in-depth analysis and gang them up here. I think all four of these are great, and they deserve your consideration! Click on a project’s title to visit its page.

End Of The Road

“The 28 Days Later of werewolf movies”. I like where these guys are coming from, and I certainly agree with their premise: werewolf movies traditionally suck. If this pitch video doesn’t win you over, the credits at the end will.

Fright Fight: Online Multiplayer Fighting for Mobile

“…a ‘Smash Bros’ style online multiplayer brawler featuring horror, steampunk, RPG elements… and zombies!” Play as one of four brawlin’ monsters, including a werewolf. I’m not normally down with the iPad controls, but I’d play the heck out of this.

Freeborn: Guts full of awesomeness

“Having a pilot is great, but we want to sell this to cable as a true series. To do that, we need flash in our sales package. Having the makeup and effects in a werewolf show is essential, but it also costs. A lot!” Help them cover their costs and get exclusive access to footage of a full-on werewolf transformation. These folks have been working on Freeborn for a long time and every time I check in, it looks better than ever.

Little Red

“…a comic book series about a werewolf fighting other legendary phenomenon monsters…” I like a mean Red Riding Hood, especially when she’s an unstoppable killing machine.

Best of luck to everyone involved!

Listen to “Werewolf” by father & daughter grindcore band Sockweb

sockweb

Grindcore band Sockweb have just released a video for their song Werewolf. What makes this especially awesome is that Sockweb’s two members are Adam “Blackula” Young and his 6-year-old daughter Joanie “Bologna” Young, and that the video is done entirely with sock puppets. Just… just watch it.

Werewolf is the lead single off Sockweb’s debut record of the same name, which comes out later this month Monolithic Records and features guest appearances by some big names from the grindcore scene. Adam describes the album as

Sockweb Werewolf Cover Art possibly the first concept album written by a seven year old – as Joanie writes all of the lyrics herself – Werewolf chronicles the friendship of Joanie and Wolfie, a werewolf she found hiding under her bed from a storm. All starts off well, but then Joanie and Wolfie run into trouble with mean bullies, vampires who steal jewellery, and ultimately the wicked witch who originally cursed Wolfie…

You might have heard another track from the record, Pancakes, which went viral earlier this year. If you dig the song and want to support Sockweb, check out their IndieGoGo campaign, which is a great way to pre-order the album and help them raise money for producing CDs and other kick-ass merch like the poster and shirt below.

This song and the whole project are exactly why I love running this site!

Kickstart “Undead Apocalypse” & rule post-apocalyptic Europe

As ubiquitous life-long aspirations go, “ruling the irradiated supernatural wasteland that used to be Europe” is up there with “building a log cabin” or “publishing a novel”, but it’s also the kind of life goal that’s difficult to self-start. You can take carpentry or writing classes at your local community college, but there’s no Learning Annex course on “Instigating World War III” or “Facilitating a Transnational Nuclear Exchange”. But here’s the good news! Now you have a chance to act out a monster apocalypse with your friends and loved ones, thanks to the Kickstarter for Undead Apocalypse: War of the Damned.

Undead Apocalypse is a fast-paced, beautifully-designed board game for 2 to 4 players. Each game lasts 30 to 90 minutes and pits factions of Zombies, Vampires, Werewolves, and post-apocalyptic Humans against each other in a fight to the death (or undeath, as it were).

After World War III the people of Earth thought it couldn’t get any worse; they were wrong. The nuclear devastation was bad enough, reducing once-great cities to rubble and forcing hardy survivors to scavenge for resources. But soon—whether the result of radiation, toxins, or supernatural wrath—ancient evils long thought mere legend awoke and took hold in the real world.

Undead Apocalypse was designed by Ben Radford, a “real-life scientific paranormal investigator” who has previous game design experience with Playing Gods, and features high quality miniatures (including an aerobics-enthusiast werewolf) created by Lasha Tskhondia.

Monster Minis

Ben and his army of designers and game experts are trying to raise $50,000, which might seem like a lot, but producing something as complicated as a boardgame is expensive. Luckily, boardgames on Kickstarter have a tendency to end up well-funded – for instance, the Machine Of Death game Kickstarter raised over 10 times as much. The minimum pledge to get a physical copy of Undead Apocalypse is $65, but you can get a print-and-play PDF version for a minimum contribution of a dollar. A dollar. I spent more on electricity to power my computer while writing this post, and I’m no closer to being werewolf monarch of post-apocalyptic Europe. Guess I better go contribute!

“Scarlet Huntress” comic is about killing werewolves but Kickstart it anyway

The ongoing saga of the Scarlet Huntress is a passion project in comic form by husband and wife team Sean and Stephanie Forney. Right now they’re running a Kickstarter project for The Scarlet Huntress Anthology, a graphic novel collecting three new stories by John Barker, Bryan K. Borgman Stephanie Forney herself. I haven’t read any of the previous Scarlet books, and when I do I’m sure I’ll shake my head at all the senseless werewolf-murder, but I’m a big fan of spouses teaming up to make cool shit, and I like this project a lot.

In addition to a copy of the new book in a variety of formats, rewards for backers include:

  • copies of the previous three Scarlet books (one of them’s a children’s book, which is an idea I love)
  • photo prints of the live-action inspiration for Scarlet, model Brianne Jeanette
  • metal and resin miniatures sculpted for use in Bryan’s tabletop game Kaiju Kaos
  • other stuff, including advertising space in the new book, a t-shirt to cover your frail human form, and artwork to increase the werewolf-quantity of your living space

Below you’ll find the cover for the Anthology, Brianne in full-on Scarlet mode, and examples of the miniatures. For more details on the history of Scarlet Huntress and the stories in the Anthology, go check out the Kickstarter campaign. Best of luck, Forneys and friends!

Want the 2014 Werewolf Horror Calendar? Check out my pitch video & Indiegogo campaign!

My wife Tandye and I just launched an Indiegogo project for the 2014 Werewolf Horror Calendar! We’re trying to raise $6,700 Canadian in the next 30 days, and we could super use your help on this Werewolf Wednesday (or any day before May 24, really). Below is the pitch video (yes, that’s me, terrified to be in front of a camera but giving it my best).

Visit the campaign page to get all the details, including all of the things contributors can get in exchange for their support, and notes on what the artists are thinking of creating for the calendar. Oh, and here are three desktop backgrounds derived from stills from the video. They’re drawn by Tandye and they still crack me up, even though I’ve literally seen them each a million times in the past two weeks. Literally.
