Twelve Worthwhile Werewolf Items on Etsy

If you’re an artist who produces a lot of one-off pieces or a “crafty” person with a penchant for Fimo and paper clay you probably already know about Etsy, but for those who don’t, here’s the main sentence: Etsy is an online marketplace where anyone can sell their own handmade wares.  There’s a lot of stuff on Etsy. Some of it is made with heart and care, and some of it is made by people who want to charge you $30 for a $10 cotton t-shirt with “TEAM JACOB” written on it in sparkly fabric paint. Suffice it to say that a search for “werewolf” yields a lot of blubber, but there are some juicy morsels for those who persevere. Here are a dozen things I found this afternoon that I thought were worth sharing (meaning I would buy them for myself).

Tim Seeley’s New Comic “Wild Game”, Where Werewolves Eat the Homeless

Bloody Disgusting has got the scoop on “Hack/Slash” creator Tim Seeley’s new comic franchise (and soon to be film), “Wild Game”. Here’s the premise:

In a world where Werewolves were long ago hunted nearly to extinction by humans and thought only to be urban legends, the few remaining packs live among us in secret. But, the beast can’t be caged forever. Once a year: runaways, homeless people, anyone who won’t be missed… are captured and brought to a secluded private destination to be hunted for game by the last living Werewolves on earth.

Visit the Bloody Disgusting article for some exclusive art from the comic. I’m on the fence about Pasquale Qualano‘s artwork (what’s that female werewolf doing next to that tree?) but Bloody Disgusting thinks it’s going to be the next “30 Days of Night” but with werewolves. We’ll see!

“William” by Mathieu Aerni

Canadian artist Mathieu Aerni is coming at you like a northern bullet with this killer image of William (who you might remember from such films as Underworld: Rise of the Lycans and When Harry Met Sally). Mathieu posted this on his CGPortfolio back in November 2009 and it’s been my desktop background ever since. William was sculpted and textured in ZBrush and given some fur in Photoshop. Check out some more renders on Mathieu’s site, and while you’re at it have a look at some of his other work– chances are good you’ve seen his work in a feature film in the past year.

The Return of McGinty & Hughes: Limited Edition John Allison “Red Riding Hood” Print

John Allison - Red Riding Hood detail

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of John Allison’s work. His long-running comic Scary Go Round sustained me for years, and his new (and even better) comic Bad Machinery was what finally convinced me to start using Google Reader– I require an immediate alert when the newest one is posted. John also managed to eat a chocolate bar and shake my hand at the exact same time, which just goes to show the industrious spirit that helped the British to colonize so much of the world.

If you like werewolves and you like comics, John’s just started taking pre-orders for a limited-edition print that you can probably add to your list of likable things. At £10 + £2.50 international shipping, there’s no reasonable excuse to refrain from buying one, especially considering that each purchase helps support a fellow who’s been giving away amazingly entertaining material for years. Here are the details:

A2 poster (420 x 594 mm — 16,5 x 23,4 in). Giclee prints on heavy glossy 200gsm stock.

McGinty (werewolf) and Hughes (small monkey) present “Red Riding Hood”. Signed and numbered run of 100. You can see a larger version of the poster here.

Ginny & Clutch (Little Red Riding Hood Reloaded)

U! a.k.a. Uriel A. Duran has shared some werewolf art with me that I feel compelled to share with everyone else, on account of how much I love the concept and character designs. Meet Ginny & Clutch!

Ginny & Clutch by Uriel A. Duran

Hometown: Some lost town on Route 66.
Likes: Fast cars, faster music, robbing banks and ice cream.
Dis-likes: Being chased by the police, woodsmen and/or hunters.
Super Powers: Ginny has an IQ of 250 and is not afraid of anything. Clutch is a werewolf —’nuff said.
Personality: Ginny may seem like a shy girl, but behind that appearance there’s a really evil and wicked mind. She’s very manipulative, yet she’s with Clutch because she truly is in love with him (but won’t admit it, at least in public). Clutch on the other hand is grumpy and stubborn but once you get to know him you’ll find he’s actually very kind.

If you’d like to see these characters developed further, make sure to let Uriel know. Thanks for sharing, my friend!

World of Warcraft Cataclysm: Worgen Confirmed As Playable Race for Alliance

World of Warcraft: Worgen

The official presence of the werewolf-like Worgen as playable characters in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm has been confirmed by everyone and their mom, including Blizzard. Check out the official Cataclysm site for more details on the Worgen, including backstory, player models, screenshots and concept art. The official sites seem to be suffering periodic downtime as a result of all the interested visitors, so be gentle. Below are some locally-hosted (hi-res!) copies of the Worgen concept art, in case your refresh button isn’t working.

Murder Moon Writer Breaks Down Another Page

Strangeways: Murder Moon

Strangeways: Murder Moon writer Matt Maxwell posts full pages from his werewolves & cowboys comic on CBR‘s Robot 6 blog, then provides a “director’s commentary” on the writing and Luis Guaragna‘s art. If you still haven’t read Murder Moon, seeing it one page at a time with insight from the creator is a great way to take it in. Matt posted page 16 yesterday– check it out.

“Astounding Wolf-Man #25 Cover” by Jason Howard

Astounding Wolf-Man #25 Cover by Jason Howard
[click for full version]

Jason Howard does the killer artwork for The Astounding Wolf-Man, which you need to be reading if you’re not already doing so. I’m not going to talk about why this picture is awesome, or why dragoniaKMP submitted it as a suggested Weekly Werewolf image. I mean, just look at it. Jason Howard knows how to draw bad-ass werewolves, and if you need further proof, check out his DeviantArt gallery or pick up a copy of the lastest Astounding Wolf-Man.

“Puss ‘N Boots” Movie Poster by Glen Ostrander

Puss N Boots by Glen Ostrander
[click for full version]

Glen Ostrander submitted this image back in April, and with the recent discussion of whether Michael Jackson was a werewolf or a werecat in the Thriller video, the time seemed right to post it. “I recently created a pastiche type horror movie poster”, Glen writes, “for a weekly challenge at a website I contribute to called Conceptart.org. The challenge was to design a character based off of Puss in Boots.” From the moonlit sky to the dramatic transformation poses, there’s a lot of werewolf in this were-cat picture! I particularly like the typography on the full-sized version– I can easily see this as a poster for a 1980’s horror film. You can see more of Glen’s wonderfully visceral artwork (including some awesome zombies) on his blog, and in this Conceptart.org forum thread. Thanks for sharing this, Glen, and sorry for taking so long to post it!

Official Michael Jackson “This Is It” Tour T-Shirt Designs Include Thriller Werewolf

Michael Jackson Thriller Werewolf T-Shirt

Before he passed away, Michael Jackson was getting ready for “This Is It”, a 50-show residency at London’s O2 Arena. Now that Michael’s gone, refunds are being issued for tickets, but the official Michael Jackson tour web shop is still selling This Is It merchandise, including this “Cartoon Thriller video Michael Jackson Werewolf shirt“. Questions of taste and decorum aside, I want this shirt.
