A headline like “Christopher Lee, Spies, and Werewolf Sex” is worth copying

The Austin Chronicle has an excellent piece on director Philippe Mora‘s experiences in Prague while shooting Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf. He talks about the legendary Christopher Lee, having to explain 1,000 punk extras to a military general, and the challenges of shooting a three-way werewolf sex/transformation scene. (more…)

Emaji Entertainment to reboot “The Howling”, hopefully do it right this time

Bloody Disgusting and several other horror news outlets are reporting that Emaji Entertainment has acquired the rights to the 1981 classic werewolf horror movie “The Howling”, and plans to remake it as the first in a series of reboots. Hooray, but also… oh no. (more…)

Scream Factory releasing Howling II on Blu-ray for some reason

In a surprise announcement on Twitter and Facebook, Scream Factory has admitted that they will be afflicting werewolf and horror movie fans with a Blu-ray version of the 1985 “classic” Howling II: Your Sister Is A Werewolf. (more…)

First Trailer for “The Howling Reborn”: questionable dialogue, (glimpses of) cool werewolves

Despite posting about it twice last year, I’d forgotten that the Howling franchise is about to get another entry (or is it a reboot? I can’t tell). Here’s the first trailer, brought to my attention by HorrorBid.

Questions: why does that guy look like Harry Potter? Why does this remind me so much of An American Werewolf in Paris? Why are people still writing lines like “I don’t bite… much.”? And when do we get to see more of those werewolves? I had an email conversation with someone involved in the production last year, and this person indicated that the blurry mobile phone photo that leaked didn’t do the werewolf design justice at all. This person also mentioned female werewolves, which I suppose isn’t much of a surprise after seeing this trailer.

“The Howling” Hardcover Novel Re-Issued in Lettered, Deluxe & Collector’s Editions

Horror-crazed bibliophiles, doff your hats and get out your wallets! Mansion House Books has re-issued three gorgeous hardcover editions of Gary Brandner‘s “The Howling”, the classic werewolf novel that inspired the classic werewolf film. These came out last November (thanks to reader Chris L for poking me) and all three editions are still available for purchase. From the Mansion House Books site:

Out of print for many years and next to impossible to find in hardback, Gary Brandner’s horror novel is now available to collectors and fans in a quality signed hardback edition with a new introduction by the author.

The Collector’s Edition (£40) is limited to 300 numbered copies. Bound in Colorado cloth with headbands, coloured endpapers & bound in ribbon bookmark.

The Deluxe Edition (£110) is limited to 150 numbered copies. Quarter bound in grey goatskin leather with cloth-covered boards, headbands, marbled endpapers, bound in ribbon bookmark and raised bands on spine. Contains interior artwork not found in the Collector’s edition.

The Lettered Edition (£395) is limited to 26 copies, lettered A through Z. Hand sewn, fully bound in goatskin leather with foil blocking to front and spine, raised bands on the spine, gilt edges, handmade marbled endpapers, headbands and bound in ribbon bookmark. Housed in a hand-made solander traycase. Also contains interior artwork not found in the Collector’s edition. May cause nearby werewolf fans to weep.

All three editions are signed by Gary Brandner and feature cover and interior artwork by Dan Harding (see this earlier Werewolf News post for a closer look at the cover).

I’m an admirer of finely-crafted collectibles and a huge book nerd to boot, so I’m pretty excited about this! I’ve just requested a shipping invoice for a Canadian address– when my Collector’s edition arrives I’ll post a review!

Get ready to cringe! Dialog from The Howling III + a solid gold quote from The Howling II

The last line of dialog in this clip from The Howling III is making the rounds today as a candidate for “the worst line ever” in a movie. I… I might agree with that. It’s definitely one of the lowest points in an already cringeworthy movie. But coincidentally, there’s a short exchange in The Howling II that never fails to make me chuckle with genuine glee:  Jenny, What’d He Say? [mp3]. So absurd! Ben, you skeptical fool!

“The Howling” Werewolf, The Way You Want To See It

This is too cool to just post on Fuzzy Camera. Horror artist Dan Harding has evidently been commissioned to paint a new cover for the re-issue of The Howling (which I didn’t know was happening, but cool). This, my friends, is a werewolf. Brilliant work, Dan!

Arrow In The Head gives us a first look at a “Howling Reborn” werewolf

Arrow In The Head is responsible for me fruitlessly using the “Sharpen” filter in Photoshop a whole lot this afternoon. They’ve got an exclusive first look at one of the werewolf designs being used in “The Howling Reborn” via a blurry photo from the set. I’m not sure who sent them the photo, but it came with this description:

The werewolf you see below is one of the henchmen werewolves. Flat snout. The head werewolves have the classic HOWLING sticking out snouts. I know you’re all better people for knowing this.

Conspicuously missing from that description is an explanation of the giant ears, the smaller-than-a-human’s nose and the Henry Rollins neck. Partial credit for originality and using practical effects instead of CG, but c’mon. Whoever approved the maquette for this design obviously look at it from the side.

Update: okay, it’s not as bad as that. I got carried away. There are definitely things I’d change about the design, but overall it’s pretty cool.

The Mystery of “The Howling Reborn” and the Boring Plot Synopsis

Buried three pages deep in the Moonstone Entertainment web site is this synopsis of “The Howling Reborn”, the upcoming remake of “The Howling”:

On the eve of his high school graduation, unremarkable Will Kidman finally bonds with the girl he has long yearned for, reclusive Eliana Wynter. But he also discovers a dark secret from his past… that he is about to become a werewolf. Now, in an effort to fight destiny and save their love as well as their lives, they must battle not only Will’s growing blood lust but an army of fearsome beasts bent on killing them… and then, us all.

Is it just me or does this have nothing at all in common with the original film? Is this just an attempt to piggyback a new (and dull-sounding) werewolf movie on the name recognition of the Howling series?
