As the new year dawns, I’m going to start it off by looking back on one of the handful of new werewolf films that came our way in 2014. (I hope to catch up with the likes of Late Phases, When Animals Dream, Wolves, and especially WolfCop in the months to come.) The polite werewolves of “What We Do In The Shadows”
What We Do In The Shadows is a horror/comedy/mockumentary by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, and as the recently-released official trailer shows, the film focusses heavily on a troupe of Wellington vampires. Other supernatural creatures are involved, including a pack of scruffy but well-mannered werewolves who figure prominently in the film’s third act. (more…)

I recently received an email from Lance Polland, a filmmaker whose two most recent projects were Bloody Bloody Bible Camp (featuring “Sister Mary Chopper”) and Crack Whore (switchblade revenge against rapist hillbillies). His latest film is Werewolves In Heat, which he describes as “‘The Hangover’ meets ‘Werewolves on Wheels’ with a dash of ‘American Pie'”. (more…)

Making a Monster Movie? You Need The United Monster Talent Agency
Even if you don’t recognize his name, you’ve probably seen Greg Nicotero‘s handiwork. He helped form KNB Efx Group in the 80’s and his creature & gore special effects have been seen in films like Cursed, Splice, Grindhouse, The Mist, Predators and most recently, AMC’s The Walking Dead. Werewolf News reader Viergacht sent me a link to an awesome little short film Nicotero directed last October: The United Monster Talent Agency.
“What if classic monster weren’t special effects but real, (sort-of) trained critters?” writes Viergacht. “A short by special fx artist Greg Nicotero… which includes an out-of-control Wolf Man tearing up the set and getting shot with a tranq!” Watch it below, and keep an eye out for cameos by Eli Roth, Robert Rodriguez and Frank Darabont.
That’s an industry I could work in! If you’re interested in reading about how Nicotero put this together, Shock Till You Drop interviewed him in October– it’s worth a read!
Trailer for “Vampires Suck”: I will see this movie on general principles
It’s basically a “Twilight” spoof by the same people who did “Scary Movie” and its sequels, “Disaster Movie”, “Date Movie”, “Meet the Spartans”, etc. I will still be seeing it because I identify strongly with its message.
