Back in 1987, when I was six and too young to care about what was on TV after the cartoons were over, Fox ran a series called Werewolf. It only lasted for 28 episodes (plus a 2-hour pilot), but today it still lives on in the form of extremely thorough fan sites, bootleg DVDs and episodes posted to YouTube. The plot was nothing ground-breaking (werewolf evades bounty hunter while searching for a cure to his “curse”), but the werewolf effects were handled by everyone’s favourite werewolf creator, Rick Baker.

Now, after 22 years of VHS copies and sketchy DVD bootlegs, TVShowsOnDVD.com has learned that Werewolf is being re-released on DVD. Shout! Factory is currently working on a package called Werewolf – The Complete Series. Details of the package’s contents aren’t available yet, but with a tentative release date of September 1st 2009, Shout! Factory has got the summer to (hopefully) cram the DVDs full of extras. I know I’m not alone in hoping there’s an extended featurette on Baker’s kick-ass seven-foot-tall werewolf costumes!

This is totally off-topic, but if I could somehow get my hands on a suit like that, I would instantly start creating a “Werewolf In Academia” or “Werewolf in the Corporate World” sitcom. And I’m talking about something along the lines of Arrested Development (i.e. something actually funny) and not Seinfeld.

Actually the series effects were handled by Greg Cannom, not Rick Baker. I know him personally and was a big fan of the show when I was a kid, he even gave me one of the arms from the show when I went to his studio. Rick Baker did a great job, but Greg has his own niche in werewolves as well. He even did Ozzy Osborne in “Bark at the Moon”.

It is also noted that they did work together at one point, this may have been one of those projects.

I have been following Rick Baker’s career since 1981. I read in Fangoria way back in 1987 that Rick Baker designed both werewolf before the show and that Greg Cannom was the guy that applied the make up or werewolf costumes to the actors. So there it is, Baker designed it and Greg Cannom applied it.

I used to watch this show as a young teenager and it scarred me so much I made my little brother watch it with me when it came on at 11pm or 12am. We had broken windows in our living room covered only in clear plastic and I was convinced a werewolf was gonna jump right through and eat us!! I think the special effects are excellent for 1987! So yeah I’m buyin the DVDs ;)

I’ve been waiting for this for a long time now.
This is one of those productions where – although very much steeped in it’s era – was also so heavily steeped in gripping atmosphere because of the effort put into the design and direction, that it remains forever etched in the memory as a legend of it’s time! Definitiely buying this, and glad I waited before finding a bootleg.
I remember reading about it’s actual marketing at the time of it’s FOX release, quite interesting.
    Cheers for the news!

I think that someone should come up with a final werewolf to show if Eric really does hunt down and kill Remey the werewolf who had started the curse and show if eric does clear his name of the murder of his friend or if he goes to jail cause i am very positive that all the viewers are very curious of how it ends let me know what you think and maybe i can help with the ending if i can ty Brian. ty again

Unfortunately, Werewolf DVD release plans have been scrapped due to Shout Factory unable to secure the rights to 2 songs used in the Pilot episode. They’re not saying who, but I know who: Mike and Mechanics -Silent Running/ and Timbuk3-The Future’s Show Bright (I gotta Wear Shades). So shout Factory had to unfortunately give the rights back to Sony. You can thank those pricks in the music industry and them wanting more money to use the songs that this happened. I’m so bummed out.

is ther a soundtrack out for werewolf tv series?

  19. Andrew Says:

Charles, the whole DVD thing was canceled because two washed-up bands who had music in the show wouldn’t license their songs (at least not for a reasonable price). I guess an official soundtrack without them would be possible, but I think it’s unlikely.

well no response to any comments here…why dont they make a movie werewolf…….starring gerard butler as eric cord…….clint eastwood as alamo joe and robert duvall as skorzeny. base it on the pilot and all hallows eve and running with the pack and the boy who cried werewolf? just a guess. the wolf man movie might encourage this movie idea..hollywood seems to be running out of ideas…we the people of the working world who love movies need to write for holly would if i could. charles
