Being a web developer by trade, I normally hate animated GIF images with a fiery passion, but what AbyssWolf has accomplished in 252 small frames is nothing less than magnificent. It’s hard to imagine all the energy and detail of a werewolf transformation being captured in a pixel-based animation, but here it’s expressed with drama and motion to spare.

AbyssWolf hails from Madrid, Spain, and a browse around his DeviantArt gallery reveals an artist with an eye for detail and a truly impressive command of pixels. Be sure to check out the minotaur, the dragon and an earlier version of the werewolf transformation above. Many thanks to Tandemonium for spotting this one!

Rick Baker on “The Wolfman”

Crave Online has a two-page interview with Rick Baker, whose special effects genius brought us pretty much every fantastic silverscreen werewolf of the past 30 years. A lot of the interview is similar to ones conducted by MTV and ShockTilYouDrop back in August– Baker talks about how The Wolfman star Benicio del Toro already sort of looks like a werewolf, his rocky relationship with CG effects and his reasons for continuing to develop “old school” makeup and prosthetic techniques despite CG’s capabilites (hint: he says “I like making the sh*t.”).

What’s interesting are Baker’s comments on the challenges of making a dramatic transformation sequence out of a werewolf that’s relatively low-key compared to the ones in AWIL and The Howling.

I kind of said, “To be honest with you, I don’t know how we do this transformation. I don’t know how we make an American Werewolf in London kind of a thing out of this slight change.” His nose is only this much longer. His teeth grow and some things… he’s not a four-legged thing. His feet do get a little more doglike and the hands grow claws and stuff. There’s things we can do but also how do you do it and try to make it original. After Werewolf and the Howling movies, how many times can we see these stretchy faces and claws busting through and all that stuff.

Rick, I think I speak for werewolf fans everywhere when I say that the stretchy faces and claws busting through are exactly what we want… but if anyone can some up with something better, it’s you.

Sinfest: Uncle Sam’s Little Problem

Tatsuya Ishida’s comic Sinfest is a Good Thing of the Internet. Today’s comic is relevant to those who like werewolves, democracy and exploiting the innocent masses like a slavering beast (or not). Note what happens to the stars on his hat when he transforms… nice touch, Tatsuya. Thanks to Jason Friesen for the link.

Dougherty Comments on Werewolf “Bitches”

As we reported earlier this month, Michael Dougherty is planning a TV series for Fox about female werewolves. The show is tentatively entitled Bitches. Earlier this month, Dougherty spoke to ShockTillYouDrop.com about some of the more carnal motivations behind the show.

The funny thing is I have always had this weird obsession with female werewolves. Even going back to The Howling there’s that famous transformation sequence that Joe Dante did with the fire and lovemaking. To me that was indicative of female sexuality – all sexuality has this beastly side of it. If you’re a werewolf, it should just be another aspect of yourself you’re trying to deal with. You do want to explore those parallels of being a werewolf and human sexuality. How can you date and fall in love with someone when you’re a werewolf and you start to turn when you’re aroused?

Very interesting, Michael. Very interesting indeed.

“Little Red Riding Hood” by lessthanhuman

Consider photomanipulations. Specifically, consider the masterful work done by lessthanhuman, who has been blending humans and animals on DeviantArt since 2004. His most recent work, Red Riding Hood, is a prime example of what can be done with a little Photoshop, some decent source materials and ten tons of pure talent. Here Red Riding Hood is being menaced by the Wolf, but it’s clear that got a surprise in store for her assailant. This is the one time I’ve ever really rooted for Red in this scenario!

lessthanhuman’s work is beautiful in a way that goes far beyond the technical impressiveness of his photomaniputlation skills– he’s an artist whose work is portraiture of the finest type. Check out his other work on DeviantArt, and if you like what you see, keep in mind that you can commission him. Incredibly, his rates start at a paltry $40 US, so if you want to see what you’d look like as a werewolf (or other animal hybrid), now’s your chance.

Wolfman Trailer Photos

Update: well. that didn’t take long! The Wolfman trailer posted here has been taken down by YouTube, undoubtedly thanks to Universal’s lawyer-squad. In case you missed it, here are a few choice images grabbed from the trailer:

Rick Baker Talks About Wolfman Makeup & Effects

Now that the SDCC Wolfman panel frenzy has tapered off a bit, I think it’s safe to talk about the recent interviews with Rick Baker. Baker, if you didn’t know, is the special effects guru who brought on the fur and claws in An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, Werewolf (the TV series), Wolf, Cursed, and most recently, the forthcoming Wolfman remake. Basically, if you need a werewolf designed for the screen, Baker’s your man. MTV Movies and the always-awesome shocktillyoudrop.com both recently spoke with Baker regarding his werewolf work on The Wolfman.

We Are Scientists – “Impatience” Video

New York indie band We Are Scientists have recorded a song. That song is called Impatience, and comes from their album Brain Thrust Mastery. They have also made a video for this song, which I think you will like, because it contains a (mostly) friendly werewolf. These are the kinds of things I find for you, early in the morning, because it’s my calling. Enjoy.

Wired.com Coolest Movie Metamorphoses Image Gallery

Wired.com is running a great image gallery about the Coolest Movie Metamorphoses. Two of the twelve transformations included are werewolf transformations– Lon Chaney’s Wolf Man and An American Werewolf in London.

“Beast” Photos and Trailer

German horror filmmaker Timo Rose recently sent Fangoria some exclusive photos of his forthcoming werewolf film, Beast. No werewolf shots, but plenty of gore. Also available is the official trailer, which is definitely worth checking out- lots of action, atmosphere, dark humour, and a bit of werewolf transformation. I sincerely doubt Beast will see theatrical release here in North America since it’s not a braindead romantic comedy or an American remake of a Japanese horror film, but I’m still going to do my best to track it down when it comes out.

Visit the offical Beast MySpace (ugh) page here for more trailers and photos.
