Werewolf Painting up for UK Art Award
A painting featuring a werewolf is in the running for the John Moores Contemporary Painting Prize. Woman Surprised By Werewolf, a painting by Stuart Pearson Wright, is one of 40 paintings vying for the first prize of £25,000. As reported by guardian.co.uk, ArtDaily.org and Times Online, the painting was inspired by An American Werewolf in London. All 40 paintings will be exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool between September 20th and January 4th, and the winners will be announced the first day of the exhibition.

The Problem With Werewolf Movies
CHUD.com’s Jon Abrams waxes philisophical in a fantastic essay about why werewolf movies basically stink. He suggests (rightly, in my opinion) that while every genre, sub-genre and niche in film has its diamonds in the rough, werewolf movies are fundamentally lacking.
Every major strain of genre filmmaking, whether it be the war movie or the alien invasion/science fiction movie, the time travel movie or the samurai movie, the Western or the boxing movie or the comic book movie or the vampire movie – all these have their few-and-far-between classics that make sitting through all the more inferior efforts worthwhile. The exception is the werewolf movie.

You may have seen this trailer for a werewolf movie called Night Hunger floating around on YouTube recently. Grainy, scratchy film stock, wooden voice-overs, actors who all sound constipated, budget werewolf effects, buckets of gore– this has got to be a trailer for a trashy 1970’s grindhouse flick, right? Wrong.
RIP Stan Winston: 1946 – 2008
Stan Winston, legendary special effects and creature designer, passed away at his Malibu home on Sunday the 15th after a seven-year battle with multiple myeloma. Winston created many of the 20th century’s iconic film special effects scenes, with a particular focus on creature design animatronics. You may know his work from the Jurassic Park films, the Terminator films, the Alien films, the Predator films. Winston also designed the Wolfman from The Monster Squad. We’ll miss you, Stan.
