Dylan Dog and Groucho Headed for the Big Screen

According to The Hollywood Reporter, production of the werewolf / vampire / zombie film Dead of Night starts today in New Orleans. The makeup effects are being handled by Greg Cannom and DRAC Studios, and if those names ring a bell, it’s probably because they just took home the makeup Oscar for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and they’re doing work on the forthcoming graphic novel blockbuster Watchmen.

Dead of Night is an adaptation of Tiziano Sclavi’s Dylan Dog, an Italian horror comic from 1986. According to Wikipedia,

Dylan Dog is a penniless nightmare investigator who defies the whole preceding horror tradition with a vein of surrealism and an anti-bourgeois rhetoric… Dylan lives with Groucho at 7 Craven Road in a cluttered apartment with a doorbell that screams. His hobbies include playing the clarinet and constructing model ship; he has many phobias, including claustrophobia, bats and heights. Dylan is also particularly susceptible to motion sickness, which is one of the reasons why he rarely travels.

Seems like a lot of dark humour is involved… let’s hope this one survives the transition to the big screen!

Werewolves Are The New Vampires

If you’re familiar with internet memes, you’ve probably seen barackobamaisyournewbicycle.com— the super-minimal site that displays a new feel-good thing that Barack Obama has done for you (but not really) every time you reload the page. Why do I bring it up? Well, after reading this NY Mag article that asks “Are Werewolves the New Vampires?” (by correlating the forthcoming werewolf movies with a possible resurgence in werewolf popularity), I felt compelled to assert my own thoughts on what werewolves might be, do or think. Behold:

Werewolves Are The New Vampires

Yes, this will be a permanent feature. Yes, there are a lot of entries, and yes, I will be adding more. If anyone wants to contact me about the possibility of publishing a book based on this, like what happened to Mathew Honan, please drop me a line.

Just So We’re Clear

While on the prowl for werewolf news, I find that lately, every second article, post, photo or link has something to do with the Twilight phenomenon. With a film on the way and more to come, the deluge of tween-dreamy vampire pap is going to get a lot worse before it gets better, so I want to be upfront about a few things:

  1. There are no actual werewolves in the Twilight series.
  2. Werewolf-News.com will not be providing coverage of any Twilight-related news (see Point 1).
  3. Remus Lupin could kick Jacob Black’s ass with both hands tied behind his back.
  4. Vampires are not cool.

That is all.

Superman and Batman vs. Vampires and Werewolves

You’ve got your Man of Steel and your Dark Knight in one corner, and your werewolves and vampires in the other corner. This October, DC Comics is hoping you’ll put a big pile of money right in the middle so these four forces can all grab a fistful. Superman and Batman vs. Vampires and Werewolves is a four-issue, bi-weekly title written by Kevin VanHook and illustrated by Tom Mandrake, and if it seems like I’m having a hard time getting excited about this, that’s because I am. Check this official synopsis and see if you don’t wind up the same way:

A man is killed by a mysterious creature – his body drained of blood. A woman is savagely attacked by a ferocious beast – her jugular ripped out. Bat wings flutter across the moon and the howl of a wolf echoes through the streets, for the creatures of the night have risen from the grave, and humanity’s only salvation is the combined might of The Last Son of Krypton and The Dark Knight Detective. Blood will run red when Superman and Batman face off against vampires and werewolves for the fate of the entire DCU!

See, I’m… I’m just not feeling it, guys. There aren’t a lot of plot points there to criticize, but already this feels like the sort of thing that’s been done a dozen times before, and in ways that seemed less like a deliberate cash-grab. I’m ready to have my mind changed, but I don’t have a lot of interest in this one. What about you?

Twilight – Breaking Dawn

Breaking DawnOkay. I wasn’t going to say anything about this, but there’s just way too much fuss to ignore. Author Stephenie Meyer is writing a group of books referred to as the Twilight Saga, which follows the story of teenager Isabella Swan and her interactions with various vampires and werewolves, all of whom live in a small town in Washington state. There are four books in the series so far: Twilight (after which the series is named), New Moon, Eclipse and the recently-released Breaking Dawn. There has been a great deal of excitement surrounding the release of Breaking Dawn, on par with the debut of the Harry Potter novels.

I’ve never read them, but they’re apparently a really, really big deal. I’m something of a skeptic when it comes to teen romance/horror novels, especially those with dreamy vampires and conflicted werewolves, but with Breaking Dawn getting reviewed by every other blog, magazine and news web site out there, and a Twilight feature film in the works, I get the feeling it would be unwise to ignore the series because of a few old prejudices.

Operation: Darkness

Does the world really need another game that takes place in World War II? Probably not. But what if the ranks of Hitler’s armies were bolstered by vampires, zombies and werewolves? That’s the premise of Operation: Darkness, a forthcoming game for the Xbox 360. (more…)
