Official Trailer makes “Red Riding Hood” look like “Twilight” because of course it does

The trailer for 2011’s Red Riding Hood was just released, and from the look of things, director Catherine Hardwicke is still in denial over not being asked back to direct more Twilight films. See for yourself:

A gaunt, poofy-haired male lead swanning about a forest full of sunbeams with his virginal, angelic female counterpart? Hmmm. Hmmmmm. As excited as I am to hear Gary Oldman say the word “werewolf”, I’ve got a bad feeling about this.

Werewolves and Vampires Duke It Out In New York Magazine – Roukas Dissects the Radness and Ramifications

This month’s New York magazine features a short article on werewolves by Jeff Vandam. While the “article” is only a page long, and while I would sooner expect The New Yorker to run a feature on Rambo, I was nevertheless happy to see some lycanthropic goodness in a mainstream magazine. Unfortunately, the article quickly becomes a classic werewolves vs. vampires retro-drama. Guess what? Count Chocula wins, and Edward Cullen wins the mark of cultural favor over David Naughton’s David Kessler and Jack Nicholson’s Will Randall. And while everyone is allowed to have a personal preference when it comes to monsters, I believe that the hairy-handed gents are made out of culturally richer and more enduring stuff than vampires are.

Twilight – Breaking Dawn

Breaking DawnOkay. I wasn’t going to say anything about this, but there’s just way too much fuss to ignore. Author Stephenie Meyer is writing a group of books referred to as the Twilight Saga, which follows the story of teenager Isabella Swan and her interactions with various vampires and werewolves, all of whom live in a small town in Washington state. There are four books in the series so far: Twilight (after which the series is named), New Moon, Eclipse and the recently-released Breaking Dawn. There has been a great deal of excitement surrounding the release of Breaking Dawn, on par with the debut of the Harry Potter novels.

I’ve never read them, but they’re apparently a really, really big deal. I’m something of a skeptic when it comes to teen romance/horror novels, especially those with dreamy vampires and conflicted werewolves, but with Breaking Dawn getting reviewed by every other blog, magazine and news web site out there, and a Twilight feature film in the works, I get the feeling it would be unwise to ignore the series because of a few old prejudices.
